This 12 inch, painted plaster statue of St. Lucy depicts her holding a platter with her eyes on it. She is wearing a golden crown and carrying a palm, both of which are symbols of martyrdom.
St. Lucy was a 4th century martyr. She was ordered to sacrifice to the pagan gods, but she refused. According to legend, she was tortured by having her eyes gouged out. For this reason she is the patron saint of those with eye problems. She is also the patron saint of salespersons.
