We
read in the Bible: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought
to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.”
(2Maccabess 12:46). Our Catholic tradition, along with scripture, has
always taught about the importance of praying for the dead in order
to relieve their sufferings and to help them reach their heavenly
home more quickly.
The
saints themselves teach us the importance of praying for those who
have died. May we follow their example and pray for those who have
died: our family memebers, friends, and for those who have no one to
pray for them. They certainly pray for you in gratitude for the
charity you have shown towards them.

must empty purgatory with our prayers!” -Padre Pio
