In his major work, Ascent of Mount Carmel, the 16^th century Spanish poet and mystic, St. John of the Cross, provides a road map for all who seek to make the spiritual journey to union with God. This poem recounts John's passage through the various dark nights of faith on his own journey. Reflecting on the character of a personal union with Christ, found in the surrender of the self, John encourages readers who may be passing through their own times of trial and death to self. He demonstrates how we need to leave behind all worldly ties and appetites in order to achieve “nothing less than transformation in God.” Through his wise counsel, framed in lyric poetry, st.
