Celtic crosses have been a faithfully kept tradition of Irish origin since as early as the fifth century. Their design is attributed to Saint Patrick, who one day drew a circle around a standard Latin cross. This simple addition to the cross attracted the attention of the Irish pagans, who frequently used the same combination of a circle and cross to represent the sun. A legend also explains that an open circle was used by the pagans to signify the moon goddess.
