"Pope John Paul II was born on 5/18/1920 as Karol Joseph Wojtyla. He was the first non-Italian elected in four-hundred, fifty-six years (since Hadrian VI, 1522-3) and the first Polish pope. He had lost his mother when he was quite young. He excelled in school and was very athletic. During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, he was a member of an underground theatrical club. He worked in a limestone quarry and at a job in the water purification business. After his father died in 1942, he began to study for the priesthood. He published a book of poetry entitled "Song of the Hidden God" in 1946. He was made archbishop of Krakow, Poland in 1963 and cardinal in 1967. He holds doctorates in theology and philosophy and speaks many languages fluently. On May 13, 1981, while greeting the public, Pope John Paul II was shot on St. Peter's Square at Vatican Hill, with the bullet barely missing his heart. Pope John Paul II then began to greet the public in his bulletproof vehicle, the "Pope-Mobile." ...
